A first of it's kind pedestrian bridge has been approved to be built over US 1 in the Florida Keys.

Officials say the $2.5 million project construction will begin in Islamorada in November of 2019.

The entire project would take about a year to complete, according to officials.

State and local officials hope will help the flow of traffic on the highway during busy public events at Founders Park (near mile marker 87).

The Florida Department of Transportation is now in the process of selecting a construction company to build the bridge.

FDOT will have a public meeting about the bridge from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 10 at Founders Park.
