One in four children in the United States has at least one parent that was born in another country.
A new survey, out this week from the Kaiser Family Foundation, found that in 2016, that "one in four" ratio accounted for around 20 million kids.
Of those, nearly 90 percent are U.S. citizens.
More than half of them live in just four states:
- Florida
- California
- Texas
- New York
Eight million of the children depend on Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program, suggesting that cuts in those areas would have a negative affect on immigrant families.
According to the survey analysis, "...potential forthcoming changes to public charge policies would likely lead to sharp declines in enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP as well as other programs among immigrant families, including their citizen children."
