The Hunt Is On For Tegu Lizards In Florida

Florida is setting up a program that will let people hunt invasive species like the tegu lizard.

Tegus are giant lizards native to South America. Park rangers believe that people in South Florida likely purchased them as pets, then released them into the wild when they no longer wanted them.

The lizards began breeding, and now they eat alligator eggs, tortoise eggs, and even cats or dogs.

Governor Rick Scott signed a bill that will allocate $600,000 over the course of two years for a program that lets people hunt tegus, Burmese pythons, lionfish and other non-native, invasive species on public land.

The program starts in July.
