DOH: Florida Flu Deaths Expected To Increase

The Florida Department of Health says flu deaths are expected to increase over the coming weeks in the Sunshine State.

Flu activity this past week was at higher levels than at the highest points in previous flu seasons, according to a report released Thursday.

Deaths due to pneumonia and influenza were slightly higher than expected, and two influenza-associated pediatric deaths were confirmed, bringing the total to five for the season.

As of January 27, 241 outbreaks of influenza and influenza-like illness have been reported since the start of the 2017-18 season.

More outbreaks have been reported than in previous seasons and nearly all of these outbreaks (94%) have been reported in facilities serving people at risk for complications from influenza infection.
