Florida Lawmakers Want You To Read Marriage Guide Before Tying The Knot

Before you get married, a Jacksonville lawmaker wants to make sure you've read the manual.

State Representative Clay Yarborough has filed a bill which would require anyone filing for a marriage license to read a manual called "Florida's Guide to a Healthy Marriage." It offers tips on conflict resolution, parenting, domestic violence and money management.

If passed, the guide would be written by the Marriage Education Committee: a panel of six marriage education and family advocates, two picked by the Governor, two by the President of the Senate, and two more by the House Speaker.

The guide will be paid for with private funds, and reading it would be a prerequisite for a marriage license.

The goal is to lower the divorce rate.
