Broward Bans Controversial Gay Conversion Therapy

Broward commissioners voted in favor Tuesday of changing the County's Human Rights Act.

The measure bans mental health professionals from performing so-called "conversion therapy."

Some therapists claim they can turn children from gay to straight. It’s controversial counseling that, experts say, hurts children. Gay rights activists say the practice of trying to change a person's sexual orientation is harmful.

Eight states and 16 municipalities in Florida have also banned the practice, but Miami-Dade County voted down a ban.

Violators could now face a fine of $250.
