Police: Man Who Barricaded In Hospital Room Will Undergo Psych Eval

The man who barricaded himself inside a room, armed with a knife, at the Broward Health Medical Center Wednesday surrendered peacefully to police. He will now undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The unidentified 38-year-old man, who was a patient at the hospital, made threats to hurt himself with the weapon, which prompted hospital staff to contact an on-duty officer, Fort Lauderdale police said.

When police and SWAT officers arrived, the man had locked himself inside the fifth floor room.

The man suffered self-inflicted superficial wounds from the knife and was taken into custody under Florida's Baker Act, police said.

First reports indicated he may have had hostages, however that proved to be false.
