Nutritionists Play a Role in Treating Breast Cancer Patients

Nutritionists play a role in treating breast cancer patients.

Memorial Healthcare Oncology Dietitian, Layla Silverman, says the food you eat can help some of the side effects patients experience when undergoing breast cancer treatment.

"For nausea we try to get patients to eat small, frequent meals.  Food is always better tolerated when you eat a small portion, every two to three hours during the day," said Silverman.

Another way to fight feeling nauseated comes from a plant.

"One thing that helps and it's sort of like a natural remedy for nausea, is ginger.  Ginger is very easy to prepare in a tea.  Or there's different formulations you can find at the grocery store, like ginger candy," said Silverman.

She suggests a high protein diet, fruits, veggies and carrying a water bottle around to stay hydrated.  Silverman says she always tries to get breast cancer patients to tackle treatment side effects in a more natural way before taking medicine for it.
