Unemployment Up, Florida Leads the Nation in Claims

First-time jobless claims are on the rise.

The Labor Department's report Thursday shows that 258,000 Americans filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week — up 15,000 from the previous week.

Florida led the nation in unemployment claim jumps. California, Missouri, Louisiana, and Alabama also had significant increases.

Most analysts had been expecting around 240,000 initial filings.
